Steel tip vs soft tip darts explained

Choosing between steel tip and soft tip darts depends on where and how you play.

Steel tip darts

• Designed for traditional bristle dartboards
• Preferred for league match play and serious practice
• Offer strong board penetration and reduced bounce-outs
• Ideal for players focused on precision and competitive progress

Soft tip darts

• Used with electronic boards
• Common in pubs, clubs and family entertainment venues
• Safer for casual environments
• Great for beginner players learning the game

If you play at home with a classic sisal board, steel-tip darts are the standard. If you want digital scoring and a social setup, soft tip suits better.

Bristle vs electronic dartboards

Choosing between bristle and electronic dartboards comes down to how you want to play, the level of competition, and the type of darts you prefer to use.

Bristle dartboards

• Self-healing sisal fibres
• Used with steel tip darts
• Suitable for competition and serious practice
• Built for durability and long-term performance

Electronic dartboards

• Plastic segment construction
• Used with soft tip darts
• Automatic scoring and game modes
• Ideal for family or social play

What you need to start playing darts at home

If you are a beginner setting up for the first time, here is what you need:

• One quality bristle board or electronic board
• A set of darts suited to your weight and grip preferences
• Spare flights and shafts
• A surround or cabinet to protect your wall
• A mat with marked oche line for correct throw distance

This simple setup lets you practise safely, improve your darting skills and track progress over time.

Choosing the right darts for your throw

The right darts improve your game by supporting accuracy and control.

Weight

• Lighter darts suit softer throws and faster release
• Heavier darts provide stability and smoother trajectory
• Most players use between 21 g and 25 g

Grip

• Ringed barrels offer consistent finger placement
• Knurled designs increase traction
• Smooth barrels suit players who prefer a clean release

Material

• Brass darts are affordable and ideal for beginner players
• Tungsten darts are slimmer, denser and preferred for high-level match play

Finding the perfect balance between weight, grip and barrel shape will elevate your performance and help create consistency in every throw.

Dart accessories that make a real difference

The right dart accessories protect your equipment and enhance performance.

Our accessories range includes:

• Flights in multiple shapes to customise flight path
• Shafts and stems in nylon, aluminium and carbon
• Replacement tips for both steel and soft tip darts
• Wall protectors and surrounds
• Oche lines and floor mats
• Cabinets and display cases
• Scoreboards for home or club use
• Dart wallets and storage solutions

Small upgrades can reduce bounce-outs, improve accuracy and help you maintain secure equipment between practice sessions.

Safety and correct dartboard setup

Correct setup protects your space and improves your game.

1. Mount the board so the bullseye sits 1.73 m from the floor
2. Mark the oche line at 2.37 m for steel tip play
3. Use a cabinet or surround to protect walls
4. Keep the play area clear for safe movement

Following these guidelines ensures safe practice whilst maintaining proper match standards.
