Billiard cues vs pool cues vs snooker cues: what’s the difference?

You might have heard people using terms like “billiard”, “pool”, and “snooker” when it comes to games and cue sticks. The main difference is the size of the cue ball in each game — the cue will vary based on the ball’s size.

An English pool or billiard cue ball is 4.76cm in diameter, and an American cue ball is 5.72cm. With this in mind, English pool table cues have smaller tips and thinner shafts, whereas American cues are a little thicker with a larger tip to accommodate and better control the larger cue ball.

A standard snooker cue ball is 5.24cm in diameter, and snooker pool cues are thicker and sturdier with a tip that’s around nine to 10mm in diameter.

Tips for buying a pool cue

There are hundreds of pool cues available online varying in length, thickness, material, and technology. If this is your first time buying a pool cue, weighing up the options can be a little intimidating! With this in mind, we’ve put together a quick guide to buying a pool cue.

Beginner’s tips

Let’s start with the basics:

Choose a pool cue that’s appropriate for your height. Most pool cues are 58 inches (or 147.32cm) in length. Most people between 5’0 and 6’2 can play with this length. Professional players usually opt for a 56 or 57-inch cue — pros believe this is the ideal size for the cue ball!
Make sure the tip is firmly attached to the end of the cue, and there are no cracks in the ferrule or cue wood.
Check the cue tip. If the tip is hardened or glazed over, it won’t hold chalk and won’t grip the cue ball very well. This can end in a lot of misfires!
Make sure the pool cue is straight. You can check this by rolling it flat on the pool table and see if it wobbles.
Choose a cue that feels right for you. It should be light and comfortable to hold — comfort is key for an accurate, successful game.

Deflection technology

If you want to get serious with pool, the next big jump in performance will come down to deflection technology.

Cue ball “deflection” happens when the ball spins off the intended line and goes off course. A pool cue with a lower-end mass can reduce the spin and make your shots more accurate.

Professional pool players use “low deflection technology” — these pool sticks are manufactured with special components that improve the accuracy of the cue’s shaft, especially with side spin. Low deflection cues are also far more forgiving than their counterparts, making them a good choice for all skill levels.

One-piece, two-piece, and three-piece cues

Most pool cues come in either one or two pieces. A lot of people play with a one-piece pool cue for the best performance — one-piece cues have no moving parts or joints in the shaft, so all of the shot power is transmitted straight from your arm into the cue ball.

However, two-piece and three-piece cues can play just as well as a one-piece cue. Professional players tend to play with a two or three-piece cue for portability — they can be disassembled and packed into a smaller bag or cue case, so they’re easy to transport (and less obvious to would-be thieves if you keep your cues in your car).

If you want to be a star pool player, you need to be able to control the cue ball, look at the broken rack and determine how you can sink all of the balls. A long, straight, sturdy pool cue that matches the diameter of the cue ball is an absolute necessity for complete control throughout the game.

How do I store a pool cue?

A well-maintained pool cue can last for years! We recommend storing pool cues vertically in a cue stand, out of direct sunlight and high temperatures (keep them away from fireplaces and heaters). How do I maintain a cue?

Once or twice a year, clean your cue with a damp cloth and then oil it with linseed oil. Use the oil sparingly and let it sit overnight, then buff off the excess oil the following morning.Never use sandpaper or abrasives to clean your cue as this will damage the sealer.
